A Modern Woman's Perspective On The Kingdom of God on Earth

The Frightening Mix of Halloween, Ouija, And The Souls Of The Dead

With each passing year, it seems that the controversy over celebrating Halloween continues to grow.  With the advent of TV shows like The Walking Dead and the newly released Constantine, as well as "reality shows" like Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters, it's hard to look upon my childhood holiday as the innocent exchange of candy for "trick or treating"; especially when the historical roots of the day are supposed to point to a "hallowed" or "holy" evening of remembering the dead.
Although purists will argue that this day simply commemorates those who have died, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers, I sense that in this increasingly wicked world, it has discovered its real origins and been co-opted by something far more sinister.
My Biblical worldview is seeing a dangerous confluence between a rise of interest in the Occult, the existence of the Satanic Temple, and the overt exhibitions by the music industry into supernatural and demonic imagery.  You can try to convince me of the Christian influence of Halloween, but I'm not buying it.  Nowhere does it appear in the Bible as a feast or holy day to be celebrated.  In fact, we are warned not to seek out "anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead."
That is why it is extremely disturbing to me to see a resurgence in the popularity of a talking game board we are all familiar with ... the Ouija Board.  How many of us have not come in contact with this intriguing game?  In our generation, it was simply a fun party game.  You asked the board a question and then swore that the other participant(s) were moving the planchette as it pointed to various letters, spelling out the answer you were after.  But I can remember my mother forbidding me to play with it, never really explaining why, other than to give me a creepy feeling that "ghosts" might be involved.
The eerie game board has since slipped in and out of popularity, along with Tarot cards, and séances.  But this Friday, on Halloween night (of course!) there's a new movie premiering called "Ouija".  And you guessed it, a group of kids, curious about contacting the soul of their dearly departed friend, find a Ouija board at her house and summon up dark powers from the demonic world.  Maybe I could dismiss it as just another attempt by the movie moguls to make a buck on the gullible public; except that I don't like the thought of a new generation of kids being seduced into making contact with evil spirits.  I say that, because I personally know that they exist.  Both my husband and myself have experienced their presence, in attempts to dissuade us from growing our faith.  And that faith explicitly tells us that God will turn His face away from us, if we turn to mediums or spiritualists.  Yet it seems to be an ever-increasing and attractive option in our culture.
Besides my own encounter, I faced a situation a couple of years ago that has left me unnerved.  While attending a weekend reunion of college dorm mates, one of the ladies asked another to do a Tarot card reading for her.  Now, I can remember during my college years being fascinated with wanting to know my future, and Tarot card readings were a trendy event during those years.  But having come to a knowledge of the saving grace of my Lord since that time, I was very uneasy when our group gathered around the kitchen table to watch the reading.  Out of eight women, only me and one other refused to take part.  I actually moved away from the table and prayed silently while the reading occurred.  And to the alarm of everyone there, the Death card was played.  The Reader gave some off-the-cuff answer that it didn't necessarily mean that the Player or her family were in any danger; it could simply mean that the hope of something they were pursuing or wishing to accomplish would come to naught.  But I felt a dread and foreboding ... why were they tempting Satan?  Sadly, this woman, who professed to be a Christian, and was so eager for a reading, has lost two daughters to suicide since that fateful night.
Coincidence?  Maybe.  But I am far more inclined to believe that she invited a malignant spirit into her life, and opened up her mind to the potential of these evil consequences.  Satan was only too eager to prove his power, and visited Death upon her daughters.
The Witch of Endor
You may think I am exaggerating the influence of a silly deck of cards, but the Bible tells us stories that warn us to stay away from such interrelations ... King Saul and the Witch of Endor; the Demon-possessed man of Gadarene; the man possessed by Legion, which could imply up to 6,000 demons.  Today we have occultist groups openly celebrating Black Masses, the Satanic Temple distributing "educational" materials in Florida schools, and statues in town squares commemorating Satanic gods welcoming children.  Entertainment Weekly reports that, through Fox TV, "Warner Bros. has made a commitment for a pilot for a new show, titled "Lucifer", based on the same character of DC Comics fame.... Warners will also have five other primetime comic book series on air this season, including Arrow, The Flash, Constantine, Gotham and midseason entry iZombie.  If all goes according to plan, Supergirl and Titans could eventually join the fray."  In case you haven't noticed, they all encompass characters with supernatural, mystical, or god-like personas.
In fact, I tuned in to the premiere of Constantine, the other night --- I was curious as to what the show was about, seeing that the logo included an ancient-looking Cross as part of its design.  I could only make it through the first 10-15 minutes.  The lead character was confronted by multiple demon-possessed individuals that were all too real and horrifyingly fearsome.  Although he defeated them "in the name of his Maker" (I guess that's as vague as you can get, without having to declare God on TV these days) ... I simply did not want to let the images or impressions of those demonic spirits into my mind.  I know the power and influence they have been given by the Prince of this world, Satan, and the darkness that accompanies them.
That's why I fear what seems to be an overwhelming desire of movies and TV and music to introduce our kids to these entities.  It makes me wonder if God has fully turned away from us, and is giving us over to what we've asked for -- a world without His influence; a society that grows darker by the minute.  But we can refuse to go along with the culture, and we must test the spirits of this perverse generation.  The only Spirit that I have any interest in communicating with is the Holy Spirit; and I pray that He continues to protect and guide me through these perilous and evil days.

1 Timothy 4:1-2    "But the Holy Spirit distinctly and expressly declares that in latter times some will turn away from the faith, giving attention to deluding and seducing spirits and doctrines that demons teach, through the hypocrisy and pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared [whose souls are branded with the marks of sin]."

  1. My dearest Belle.
These are the days we as believers have been warned of. This is the valley between the beginning of the time of troubles, and the return of our Mighty Savior. This is going to get Much worse! But I see the need to tell you that I can see the Holy Spirits hand upon your life. He is with you in a strong manner.
My experience is different from yours. I was told from the time I was a little boy that these days were coming. I was told to look for a rise in the spiritualistic realm. The collapse of money. The rise of racial tensions. The fall of morality. And the obliteration of our frredoms. Our constitution. Our bill of rights.
But the most troubling part is the part that most cannot see even when warned of it. There WILL be religious laws enacted in our country again. The unification of church and state. The state will do the bidding of the church, and enforce laws of worship. But these laws wont point to the creator.
God bless you on your journey. If I am blessed by our Father, and granted a place in His kingdom, I hope to meet you there. :)

    1. Thank you for your encouragement! I must confess that there are many days I feel unworthy of such kind words... I struggle to hear what the Holy Spirit would have me impart to readers, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find words of hope and inspiration. All I can do is keep sharing what I see and keep prompting people to look to Jehovah and His Son. These times are going to get darker!

    2. Michael you talk about the constitution what about my right to watch these TV shows.

    3. Belle: Don't despair. We know how the story ends. Those who patiently endure and remain faithful will drink from the river of life and eat from the trees of knowledge and healing for our rewards are in heaven and not of this earth.

Alan: I think if you follow Michael's arguments to their logical end you will realize that there will be no constitution to protect you; instead you will be forced to submit to the will of the government. Remember that it is from God that your freedom comes not a piece of parchment.

  3. Belle. these are indeed perilous times that we live in. One must always keep in mind that. . .it is the end time harvest and we are co-laborers in this harvest. Our Daddy takes care of His own. After all friend, He is the Lord of the Harvest!

  4. LOL OCD read your piece on his RBN radio show this am. He was all about the guy that wrote this piece. LOL
My real comment is: This is the first year that I am totally adverse to Halloween. It was never a holiday I understood, but this year it seemed extremely important to drop any type of acknowledgment. I haven't participated in anything Christmas or Easter since the early eighties. (Halloween was "oh it's just some candy for little kids.")
This is my first year that I felt the Holy Spirit directing to flee from the candy dispensing. Like you said, the Bible warns against having anything to do with these pagan rituals. Do not let demons get a stronghold in your life.

  5. It is always nice to find others that stand on the same solid ground of truth. Thank you for ringing the warning bell concerning Satan's dangerous ploys. May the blood of Christ cover you, May His wings shelter you, May His Word arm you, May His Cloak of Righteousness protect you, May you find sure footing on His solid foundation, and May His voice be heard through you. AMEN

  6. My compliments on this article Sister Belle; I am encouraged to see saints such as yourself standing up for the truth and standing against the lies that pervade to increasing degrees of deception. I wrote a part I of an article dealing with the Ouija board (and the occult in general) and since that time, I actually went to see the film (with MUCH prayer and seeking God as to whether I should go or not) and am compiling information about the film, and more such information about the occult and demonic influences. It is my hopes that upon completion of this part II that people, after seeing the movie (and whose curiosity make spurr them on to the Internet) will do a search on "Ouija" and come upon my articles - and YOURS as well! That said, I would like your permission to post a link to this article of yours in part II of my own. To see part I simply go to the web site (its the most recent, so you will see it first thing): www.thetruthunderfire.com GOD bless you Sister Saint and may the LORD continue to use you according to the Spirit of grace through the LORD JESUS CHRIST for His Glory and Honor!

  7. Belle , So much demonic activity is on the prowl and the church continues in its slumber. We are called to fight this spiritual war and yet we really have no idea as to the authority that Yeshua has given each of us myself included. The time is now to learn to engage with these lesser entities and start to claim our purpose. LETS GET BUSY!!!!!

    1. Absolutely! Satan has been devious in removing from our Church doctrine the knowledge of the power and authority given to us through Christ. We need to reclaim it!

  8. Hey Allen , Watch whatever you want but don't delude yourself that satan can't use this pap for his good. This isn't a personal rights concept ,this is a spiritual war. Your comment is self indulgent and worldly. Look at the bigger picture my friend! Belle is trying to show us that the enemy is in the gate. For those with ears to hear and eyes to see!

  9. may the grace and peace of God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My name is James, I am in Central America directing a relocation project for American brethren and Jews. Its in the beginning stages. God´s judgement will come on the USA in a very horrible way because of all the knowledge that country has received. I will take humility, courage and faith to take this step. But, the American taxpayer, wanting or not, are funding abortion push all over the Earth, homosexual agenda all over the Earth, and if I were an American, I would consider change my citizenship. God bless u all!!!!

    1. James, I appreciate your thoughts and agree that God's judgment is on America for our sins. While I recognize that God may be removing some of His people from this nation to others, I also feel He has given assignment to some of us to "hold our ground" for Him. I will continue here until He tells me otherwise. I thank you for your faith and your commitment to do as He has instructed you.

  10. I'm just going to throw out my two cents on this. As a child we did do the trick or treat thing and it was fun to get the candy and haul it home. We never realized and I don't believe my parents did either that it was a holiday that celebrated the cult. However, after becoming a true follower of Jesus, I was very cautious as to what my own children did on that particular day. The church we were attending at the time would have something for the children such as games and refreshments and they really enjoyed it and we did different things with them instead of that celebration that most children did. I told them that I felt strongly that that day and time during the year was somewhat demonic and it was given to me from the Lord not to celebrate that as it gives attention to "the dark side" and Satan. Those that understand this know how well Satan and those who follow him can make everything look so attractive and fun and harmless. That's the plan of action that seems to be working so well these days. As my children got older they understood better. The Ouija board game is satanic as well as card reading, palm reading, etc. I know because of experience as a child playing that so called game. Looking back I can remember how we accused each other for moving that object around the board to even getting mad at each other, knowing darn well we had not. We played that game not even thinking or given thought to it that it was really anything but a joke. I do not watch anything that is "dark" or participate in anything of the sort and the reason is, I truly believe by doing so, we are just making the invitation to allow Satan a foot in the door. It's hard enough in everyday living to keep him out, but asking him in purposely is something we can avoid if we choose to. As to the gentleman who posted his comment to Michael about his right to watch those types of TV shows or movies, yes indeed, that is your right to do whatever you wish. But I say to you, be warned, what you allow in your heart and mind does bring it's consequences. As a follower of Jesus, I look to the scriptures to help me live the life that He would have me to do so and do the best that I'm able to do. If we allow these things into our lives of the occult as seemingly innocent as they're made out to be, we are just setting ourselves up to become hardened slowly but surely to accept even more evil as it progresses. I'm grateful to read so many responses here that share my belief and hopes. Thank you all and thank you Belle.

    1. I agree with you, Lisa, on all your points. I, too, am wary of letting Satan or his demons into my home -- whether through what I read, watch on TV, or listen to. We must always be on guard!

  11. I agree with you 1000% and believe we are dealing with demonic entities whether we see them or not.Our young ones are like candy to them as they cannot wait to demoralize and corrupt their minds with the filth you mentioned and far more!If anyone had any clue as to what they were celebrating and look their own mother or baby in the eye while learning such dark lessons, would they ever see the facts of how and why we are in the place we are in now?I wonder if anyone could figure out why a movie such as The Exorcist could be pinned as THE most frightening horror movie in any generation!?!?!Who in Hell is Captain Howdy anyway?Just some fun loving child molesting demon out to have a good friendly holsum time torturing some poor child who never knew any better!Ouija boards have history and a very dark one!As far as media, music, movies and gaming are concerned, the poison candy has already been accepted by the majority and they all love the taste!Well done LUCY(Lucifer).........but as you already know, demon, someone has a special treat for you.....in due time!:)

  13. we certainly are living in exciting times.......I remember when my wife and myself were young we were with non Christian friends and they had a Ouija board and it worked well for them, but they tried it with us and it would not work with us PTL. I have read Bpb LARSONS book HELL ON EARTH. and he talks about these demonic forces that are so prevalent today. We have to keep as far away from these practivcs as we can. We want to be one of the 5 wise virgins with out lamps full of oil and burning.. Don N

  14. Good article. And while we're at it, there is nothing in the Bible about "Christmas" (Saturnalia) or "Easter" (which, in Acts 12:4, is Herod's pagan festival). Delve into the origins of Valentine's Day (Lupercalia) and why the hearts-that-are-not-shaped-like-hearts are red - guess what bodily fluid is red; it's almost as bad as Halloween.

We Christians need to wake up to what is going on out there. Sadly, most people really don't care, they just go with the flow and keep all the holidays that Satan and the retail industry love (I'm not equating retailers with the devil).

People who love the little bit of horror they get at Halloween will soon see horror as it really is when God finally ends this evil world and the demons are loosed full-blast. As in the days of Noah...

    1. You are absolutely correct! Put "Christmas" or "Easter" or "Feasts" in the SEARCH THIS BLOG box and see what some of my previous posts have expressed. I try very hard to make sure that Scripture and history back up my suppositions, and it appears to me that Satan has been very successful in leading the Church astray.
