It was VERY MUCH a part of family day to day living to save resources, and never waste anything. Our extended family, aunts, cousins etc. would gather each summer of a weekend to harvest and preserve food. I can remember many family gatherings centered around, canning, freezing and dehydrating food picked from local orchards or family gardens. There was always an abundance in our root cellers and pantries. We fished, hunted and raised all our food with few exceptions. I was coached by my parents to never be with less than 6 months of food stored and to work towards years of food in the pantry. When my mom needed food to prepare for the family I was sent to the root celler and pantry to "shop" for the meal. I carry on this tradtion with my own children and grandchildren. I have wonderful memories of sitting on the porch watching my young son play with his trucks around the garden plants. Makes for easy weeding!! We would go out and pick our dinner and then gather to cook our meals fresh from the garden. I am confident my charges who are now grown adults with families, will be able to survive because they were taught early on how to provide for themselves. Their freezers are filled with game meat, fish and produce from their own garden efforts. It is a legacy we owe to our children to prepare them for hard times. We had many hard years of little or no money, but never went hungry and were very close as we worked together as a family unit. Perhaps hard times may carry a silver lining for those who are prepared with the correct skills and mindset to thrive. Priceless! LavendarlouAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
